A team of researchers at Nottingham Trent University set out to create a woven textile solar panel. They got to work and created a piece of fabric embedded with more than 1,000 solar cells to charge devices. We look at the potential and limitations of the technology.

Imagine not needing a traditional charger to charge your mobile phone. Or take it a step further and use what you are wearing—a jacket or pair of trousers, for example—to charge it. That's what a team of researchers at Nottingham Trent University in the UK claim to have invented: a woven textile embedded with miniature solar cells that can charge a smartwatch or mobile phone.

More than 1,000 tiny photovoltaic cells embedded in a jacket?

The researchers' goal was to create a textile solar panel that is breathable and soft to the touch. "We have combined long-established weaving techniques with modern technology to create future products which may change people's perceptions of clothing and electronics," says Matholo Kgatuke, one of the researchers and an expert in the weaving of electronic textiles.

The prototype textile solar panel has 1,200 solar cells five millimetres long and 1.5 millimetres wide, embedded in a waterproof polymer resin, according to a statement released by Nottingham Trent University. Together, the cells combined are theoretically capable of harnessing 400 milliwatts of solar energy. The researchers say the e-textile could be incorporated into a garment, such as a jacket, or an accessory, such as a backpack, and used to charge devices.

Portable charging meets fashion

Electronic yarn (e-yarn) technology has been used to manufacture this textile. The solar panel fabric in question measures 51 by 27 centimetres and is equipped with strong but highly flexible wiring that the designers claim can be machine washed at 40°C with other laundry. "The material we have developed, for all intents and purposes, appears and behaves the same as any normal textile, as it can be scrunched up and washed in a machine," says Theodore Hughes-Riley, the researcher who led the project.

The expert, Associate Professor of Electronic Textiles and part of the Advanced Textiles Research Group at Nottingham Trent University's School of Art and Design, explains that both electronic textiles and wearable devices require a power source, which is often a battery. "The impetus for this work has been to develop a lightweight and unobtrusive portable power source for these devices. This may not completely replace the battery for some applications, but it could provide a portable charging solution," he tells Interesting Engineering.

A replacement for chargers?

In the short term, it does not look like this fabric will replace traditional chargers, and it is too early to say whether it will eventually be incorporated into commercially available clothing. For now, there are still some limitations. While the researchers hope to integrate the technology into commercial products, it is still just a prototype. Hughes-Riley admits that it could be a few years before this happens.

In addition, many of the technical details of this prototype are unknown, and the results have not been published in a peer-reviewed journal—where outside scientists evaluate the details. In addition, the production of this solar panel involves "a lot of manual processes", so it is "quite time-consuming." "In the future, we hope to automate more of the production process so that we can produce textile solar panels like this quickly," says Hughes-Riley. Such clothing could be more expensive than conventional clothing, which could limit its accessibility and market acceptance.

Despite the limitations, "this prototype offers an exciting glimpse into the future potential of electronic textiles." Other researchers are also trying to create textiles that can power a variety of devices. But for now, these are one-off projects. "Until now, very few people would have considered that their clothing or textiles could be used to generate electricity," says Hughes-Riley. It remains to be seen whether these projects will change, and whether these new fabrics will manage to find a place in the market.

The need to manage waste and its valuation raises the opportunity for promising environmental projects, like FUELCAM, by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and the Universidad de Castilla la Mancha, focused on the use of hydrogenated terpenes to create biofuel from orange peels or pine tree resin.

“This project originated five years ago to revalorize waste in the Castilla La Mancha region”, explains Magín Lapuerta, a professor at the Universidad de Castilla – La Mancha, where he coordinates the Grupo de Combustibles y Motores (GCM-UCLM) and assesses the Committee for the European norms on fuel.

“The first part of this job involved working with turpentine, a terpene distilled from pine tree resin, that is after subject to hydrogenation, so that it won’t produce black smoke at combustion”, explains Lapuerta.
Then, it was the turn for orange peels, a readily available material since it is a byproduct that is not used by coopearatives and farmers.

This project stems from David Donoso’s thesis. David is a researcher at the ETS de Ingeniería Industrial de la UCLM, that comprises three research lines with three different raw materials, the three of them terpenos hidrogenados: turpentine, hydrogenated orange oil and CST, which is sulfate turpentine, a paper industry byproduct.

“Our research confirms that fully hydrogenating fuel allows to reduce soot by 55%”, says David Donoso.

Turpentine isn’t really a byproduct. It’s extracted from pine trees, and it’s mainly used to produce substances like turpentine spirits. While its extraction would have major impact on the pine tree industry and have applications to prevent fires, this research line doesn’t show much promise.

For that reason, they focused on CST and orange peels. “The research to create fuel was done with a reactor at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. We created enough to burn it with an engine”, explains Lapuerta.

The fuel was tested at Castilla La Mancha mixed with diesel fuel. In the test formulas, 20% is hydogenated turpentine or hydrogenated orange oil, and 80% is diesel.

“The percentage of biofuel could be raised. We give added value with the hydrogenation”, researchers say. It could also be tested in gas engines.

“Now we need to take the leap on an industrial scale, by testing biofuels mixed with JetA1 in aircraft turbines”, explains José Laureano Canoira López, professor at the Chemical engineering area of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM).

“We still need to find turbines to test out these results in the aviation industry. We need a refinery or biorefinery company willing to hydrogenate the materials for us and prepare a large amount to start testing on real planes”, researchers say.

However, there is a major gap that seems tough to close. In order to test out efficiently they would need to produce at least 100 liters, but for fuel companies to find the operation profitable, they would need to produce at least 1,000 liters and take the risk.

The ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) lays down the possibility of using from 10% to 50% of biofuels in aviation, as long as they meet the requirements.

There are other research lines with potential. There are other types of terpene waste, such as biowaste from parks and gardens maintenance, mostly leaves, which could also be used to make biofuels.

Manuel Manrique, Chairman of Sacyr and the Sacyr Foundation, and Javier Arroyo, Director of Fundación Juan XXIII, have signed an agreement by which the first agrees to aid the latter in the construction of its new cooking school and a catering and ready-to-eat food center.

The Fundación Juan XXIII is currently developing a large-scale training and employment center. The Sacyr Foundation will collaborate with a donation of part of the funds to build the kitchens.

The Sacyr Foundation and Fundación Juan XXIII have a long-standing partnership, and back in 2019 it already participated with the expansion and adaptation of the kitchens in its professional training center, responsible for elaborating catering products.

Fundación Juan XXIII will integrate a new official training center, student lodgings and an inclusive job creation program for young people with disabilities, at risk of social exclusion or psychological or social vulnerability into a 14,000 sq m campus.

To Javier Arroyo, “we have a long-standing history of collaboration with Sacyr, and this alliance with the Sacyr Foundation gives us the opportunity to undertake large-scale projects like this and kick-start the construction of our new professional training center”.

Manuel Manrique said, “this agreement builds into the continued support the Sacyr Foundation has given to multiple Juan XXIII initiatives over the past years”. “We share the view that opportunities and spaces for social and employment integration must be created for people in situations of psychological and social vulnerability”, Manrique added.

Manuel Manrique is Chairman and CEO of the Board of Directors since 2011. His extensive knowledge in the infrastructure, services and concessions sector has allowed him to lead and transform the Sacyr Group through the execution and fulfillment of the different strategic plans.

Manuel Manrique is one of the founding partners of Sacyr, and since then, in addition to being a partner, he has developed and held various positions. He joined as a delegate in Andalusia, and later became the company's regional director in that region. In 1998, Manuel Manrique was appointed Director of External Construction at Sacyr. In 2000 he was appointed General Manager of Construction of the Sacyr Group. In 2003, coinciding with the merger with Vallehermoso and the creation of the Sacyr Vallehermoso Group, he was appointed Chairman and CEO of the construction division of the holding company. In November 2004 he was elected CEO of the Sacyr Vallehermoso Group and in October 2011 he was appointed Chairman of the Sacyr Vallehermoso Group (currently Sacyr).

Manuel Manrique studied Civil Engineering at the Escuela Técnica de Ingenieros de Madrid. After graduating, he joined Ferrovial.

In 2018 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Murcia, at the proposal of the Faculty of Economics and Business and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

He is a member of the executive bodies of the following institutions: Member of the Executive Committee of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce; Member of the Executive Committee of ANICE; Member of the Executive Committee of the Confederación de Empresarios de la Región de Murcia, CROEM; President of the Asociación para el Progreso de la Dirección en la Región de Murcia, APD and Honorary President of the Asociación Murciana de la Empresa Familiar (Amefmur).

Education: Dr. Ingeniero de Caminos Canales y Puertos (Civil Engineer) by the Higher Technical School of Civil Engineers of Madrid. 1964 class.

Experience: José Manuel Loureda Mantiñán began his professional career at Ferrovial in 1965, where he worked until 1986, holding positions from Site Manager to Deputy Director of Construction, actively participating in all the civil works built by Ferrovial during that period.

Founder of Sacyr, where he was CEO until 2000, and Chairman until 2003. From 2003 to 2004, and after the merger of Sacyr with Vallehermoso, he was Chairman of the Sacyr Vallehermoso Group until November 10, 2004. From 1998 to 2004, he was Chairman of the concessionaires of El Elqui and Los Lagos, in the Republic of Chile, as well as the Vice-Chairman of the Autopista Vasco Aragonesa, Avasa, Bilbao, Zaragoza whose 50% stake had been acquired in the year 2000.

He was a proprietary director of Repsol from 2007 to 2021. He was director of Avasa, Itinere and Testa. And Vice-Chairman of the Association of Civil Engineers in the period 2012-2016. In 2003 this Association awarded him the profession's medal of honor.

In 2008, the Victoriano Reinoso prize was awarded by the Galician business association (Aegama). In 2009 he was named brother of Santo Domingo de la Calzada.

He is Chairman of Sacyr Servicios, S.A. and Director of Sacyr Construcción, S.A.

Until his most recent appointment, he was the acting representative of Prilou S.L., where he was an adminsitrator, since the year 2004.
