The Melbourne Waste Treatment Plant first opened in May 2019, the first facility of its kind launched by us in Australia. This plant, responsible for the mechanical and biological treatment of organic waste matter, is located in Dandenong South, to the south east of Melbourne.

It is one of the most sophisticated facilities of its kind in the State of Victoria, serving a population of 1.2 million inhabitants from eight boroughs in the metropolitan area of Melbourne. 

The plant processes organic waste matter collected in these areas, treating up to 120,000 tons a year.

A project designed for sustainability 

The plant operates in accordance with strict standards based on the circular economy. It has a composting system capable of treating the organic waste generated by nearby populations and producing up to 50,000 tons of quality compost a year. This treatment cycle fulfills the targets of the Australian waste management plan: to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfill and reduce greenhouse gas emissions such as methane. 

Furthermore, the entire composting process is carried out inside the treatment hangar, which is fully closed and has a highly efficient and reliable deodorization system. This way, nearby populations are not affected in any way.

Thanks to this Plant, CO₂ emissions will be cut by more than 80,000 tons. It will also cut down on emissions that would be generated by landfill by 85%, the equivalent to removing 13,900 cars from circulation.

Devoted to cutting-edge technologies

This plant uses some of the most advanced technology available for the treatment of organic waste. The custom technology design combines the mechanical treatment system developed by the German company Stadler with the biological treatment system developed by the Dutch company Waste Treatment Technologies (WTT). 

The expertise of Sacyr gained over more than 20 years has generated innovation in Australia’s current waste management plan, which uses aeration spigots and leachates.
