Recycling: innovation for a more circular economy

  • At Sacyr, we believe in sustainability as an agent of change and we focus on innovative projects to move forward in a zero-waste society.
  • Waste treatment plants in Melbourne (Australia) and Mataró (Spain) are two examples of Sacyr’s commitment to the circular economy.

Southeastern Melbourne (Australia) is home to one of the country’s most innovative composting plants, Dandenong South. Sacyr Concessions began managing the facility in 2019 upon completion of the construction process by Sacyr Engineering and Infrastructure.

The plant handles the biomechanical treatment of organic waste from food scraps and garden refuse, from which it produces high-quality compost certified by the Australian Standard AS 4454.

The plant helps improve the quality of life in the vicinity by: - Reducing the volume of waste that ends up in landfills by 85% - Preventing the emission of 65,000 tons of CO2 each year - Serving a population of 1.2 million residents.

Transforming waste into energy

In Spain, Valoriza Medioambiente has managed the Mataró waste treatment and energy recovery plant (in Catalonia) since 2007.

This comprehensive plant uses mechanical biological treatment to process urban waste through biomethanization and the creation of energy from waste.

The Mataró plant uses both organic waste and municipal solid waste to produce energy through biogas extraction and incineration, respectively. In 2019, the Mataró plant recovered roughly 10% of products and byproducts from incoming waste, and approximately 8,000 tons of biostabilized material.

The Mataró plant plays an important role in the fight against climate change as one of the main generators of renewable energy in Catalonia, serving a population of around 430,000 in Maresme county.

The plant also features improvements that distinguish it from others. For example, the creation of an exclusive production line to recover glass fragments from organic waste.

Valoriza Medioambiente and Sacyr’s commitment to innovation as a responsible, sustainable business management model translates into projects designed to improve the waste treatment process.
